In praise of public transportation

Flying is usually the largest component of the carbon footprint of international travelers, and it is largely unavoidable. But there are fun ways to avoid adding to that carbon footprint in country.

Public transportation not only reduces carbon footprint, but can be part of the adventure. Using subways, trains, buses, ferries, tuk tuks and rickshaws to get from point A to B is easily doable.

In many large Asian cities, private touring by public transportation is the way to do more sightseeing and less sitting in traffic. The team at Asia Answers recommends such a tour for the first day, after that, travelers are more confident to ride the subways themselves, and their trip becomes more manageable. People watching is a bonus, as is feeling more like an expat and less like a tourist.
